The political prisoners of 1 October are their parties’ leading candidates in the general elections

The lists of candidates that JxCat and ERC will field in the general elections are announced, and include most of the prisoners being held in pre-trial detention in the case against the leaders of the 1 October referendum . Jordi Sànchez, Jordi Turull and Josep Rull will head JxCat’s lists of candidates for the Congress of Deputies in Barcelona, Lleida and Tarragona, respectively. Oriol Junqueras will head ERC’s list of candidates for Congress in Barcelona, and Raül Romeva will do the same on ERC’s Barcelona list for the Senate. Meanwhile, Lluís Puig, the former Culture Minister currently in exile, heads JxCat’s list for the Senate, and Joan Josep Nuet, former member of the Bureau of Parliament with Catalunya Sí que es Pot, prosecuted by theHigh Court of Justice of Catalonia in connection with the 1 October referendum, is in fourth place on ERC’s list of candidates for Congress in Barcelona.
