Three United Nations special rapporteurs call on Spain to provide explanations in relation to CatalanGate

Breaches:

The special rapporteurs on minority issues, the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, and rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association express their concerns regarding the matter, specifically noting that ‘there is the impression of a consistent pattern and a well-planned programme to target activists belonging to the Catalan minority and their supporters in relation to their views, opinions and activities.’ It furthermore calls for investigation, prosecution and sanctioning of anyone responsible for the alleged spying. On 22 December, the Spanish government responds that the investigations are under way and that it could not comment on cases with pending investigations. On 2 February 2023, the experts reiterate their call for the case to be investigated.
