Amnesty International believes that the conviction of the pro-independence leaders violates the right to freedom of expression and demonstration

Breaches:

In its report on the trial and conviction of the leaders of the 1 October referendum, Amnesty International argues that the crime of sedition and the Supreme Court’s interpretation of it go against the principle of legality and violate the right to freedom of expression and demonstration. It also demands the immediate release of the former president of the ANC , Jordi Sànchez, and the president of Òmnium, Jordi Cuixart, since they were convicted as leaders of associations and in connection with organising protests. Amnesty will reiterate its call for their release on several occasions.
