The General Court of the European Union dismisses the appeal of MEPs Puigdemont, Comín and Ponsatí against the waiving of their parliamentary immunity

Breaches:

Puigdemont, Comín and Ponsatí had appealed the European Parliament’s decision of 9 March 2021 that waived their immunity, as per the request of investigating judge of the Supreme Court in the case against the leaders of the 1 October referendum Pablo Llarena. The General Court dismissed the allegations on the lack of impartiality of Angel Dzhambazki, the rapporteur of the Committee of Legal Affairs (JURI) The General Court finds that the fact that Dzhambazki belongs to a political group, in this case, the same as VOX, in the European Parliament, has no bearing on the assessment of the rapporteur’s impartiality. Regarding the allegations on the bias of Adrián Vázquez, Chair of the JURI Committee, against the MEPs, the Court rejects them as well, as it considers that the initiatives aimed at preventing the MEPs from taking their seats in Parliament were carried out by Ciudadanos, the party he belongs to, and not him. On the same day, in an interview, Adrián Vázquez states that the MEPs “have behaved like clowns during the whole parliamentary term” and calls them “pariah”.
