Huesca Provincial Court dismisses the appeals against the moving of the mural paintings from MNAC to Sixena Monastery

Breaches:

The conflict dates back to 1936, when the Government of Catalonia saved the mural paintings during the Civil War and, after that, they are exhibited in the Catalonia’s Museum of National Art (MNAC). The Government of Catalonia claims the existence of a contract with the nuns of the Monastery and the Government of Aragón claims that the contract is fake and that the mural paintings were robbed. On 4 July 2016, the Huesca Investigating and First Instance Court no. 2 sentences the MNAC to restore the mural paintings. The Government of Catalonia and the MNAC files appeals against the judgment. In November, the Court orders the provisional enforcement of the judgment, as the Government of Aragón had requested. The MNAC will file a report that indicates the risk of moving the paintings and the Government of Aragón a viability plan. Lastly, on 25 January 2018, the court halts the moving of the paintings until the decision is final, and will keep on opposing moving the paintings. Concomitantly, the Provincial Court dismisses the appeals against the judgment and the government and the MNAC lodge appeals with the Supreme Court.
